De profeet Mohammed richtte in 610 na Christus de islam op. Volgens moslims stuurde hun god Allah de engel Gabriël naar Mohammed om hem uit te leggen hoe mensen moesten leven. Mohammed vertelde de inwoners van Mekka over deze boodschap. Daarna verhuisde Mohammed in 622 naar de stad Medina.
